Chlorine is used for much more than just swimming pools and drinking water. In fact, the majority of each year's production is used in the chemical industry as part of the production of other materials.

Chlorine gas is dangerous because when it contacts water it creates Hydrocloric Acid and Hypochlorous Acid. It is detectable by scent and taste in much lower concentrations than are considered dangerous, but even in relatively low amounts it can harm the respiratory system. It is also a strong Oxidizer corrosive.
